More and more countries are putting up fences and walls at the borders to curb migration. While there were only a dozen barriers immediately following the fall of the Wall in 1989, the number has risen to 79. But its usefulness remains controversial.
America is doing it, Pakistan is doing it and Greece is doing it too: More and more countries are building walls and fences along their borders. “I say to everyone who resists: the fence will be completed with or without European money,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced at the end of March. His government will extend the fence along the Evros border river with Turkey by a further 35 kilometers. With the European Union refusing to pay for the construction of the fence, Athens will now pay for it out of its own pocket.
