The number of Apple self-driving car drivers drops

As is known, the Apple — just like the rest of technology companies — conducts extensive testing of products in the development phase before they are introduced. Several rumors have reported for years that this is the case of the alleged “Apple Car”in addition to data obtained from reports that the company needs to deliver to government agencies.

One of these bodies is the California Department of Motor Vehicles (California Department of Motor Vehiclesor DMV), whose data includes the numbers of autonomous cars and drivers involved in testing these vehicles by the companies that own them. By March of this year, the number of Apple drivers had increased to 201but the statistics decreased more recently.

According to macReportsfor the first time in two years, Apple reduced the number of drivers in its fleet of self-driving cars to 145according to data of the day 28th of April from the DMV. The number of vehicles, in turn, went to 66, varying by only one; this number has not changed by more than three units since 2020.

It is worth remembering that the company still does not test autonomous vehicles without the presence of a driver in the car – only three companies are licensed to do so in California.

Regarding the number of vehicles and drivers, other companies showed different situations: some reduced the number of people, such as Mercedes-Benz it’s at Waymoalthough they increased the number of cars.

The latest rumors indicate that the “Apple Car” should not be released before 2026. The development of the product would have already faced several problems, including the departure of team members and even what has already been described as a lack of purpose. Until it’s unveiled—if it ever comes—the car still has a long way to go (no pun intended).
