A crucial market for many electronics brands, a fortiori for smartphone manufacturers, India seems to be smiling Nothing. We learn that the first smartphone of the firm, the Phone (1)has already made a name for itself on the Indian phone marketwhere it sold over 100,000 copies by Flipkart (local launch partner for Nothing).

This volume distributed at the end of August, i.e. following 20 days of marketing, is all the more notable since the device was the best-selling smartphone by Flipkart in its price range. In India, the Nothing Phone (1) is sold for just over 30,000 rupees, or approximately 430 euros excluding tax. Remember, however, that the Indian market is special in that it is dominated by Samsung and Xiaomi, followed by Vivo, Realme and Oppo – each with between 4 and 7.1 million units sold per quarter, far ahead of Nothing – and that ‘Apple is not in the top 5 of the biggest sellers.

A smartphone that is generating a lot of interest in India

As pointed out GSMArena, who spoke exclusively with Manu Sharma, head of Nothing India, this figure bodes very well for a new player in the hyper-competitive (even downright saturated) smartphone market. More than 10 million Flipkart customers have also activated the e-commerce site’s notifications to be informed of the launch of the device.

If this figure may seem modest in view of the Indian population (1.38 billion inhabitants), it is an important sign of interest for a smartphone, and a brand, which are still only in their early days. Without hiding it, Nothing also plans to launch other devices that will allow it to quickly build an ecosystem of products.

In the meantime, the brand struggles on the other hand to position itself among the first on the deployment of Android 13. For Manu Sharma, the idea is to offer users of the Nothing Phone (1) a truly successful software experience… rather than hastily deploying the new version of Android. So understand that to take advantage of Android 13 on your Phone (1), you will have to be extra patient.
