Serval is an African feline that is forbidden to have as a pet in Norway.
Niño escaped and was observed at Os outside Bergen last summer. The owner then went into hiding with the animal for fear of losing him. She was charged with having the animal illegally and for illegally importing the animal and has been wanted by the police.
At the end of September, both the owner and the serval were found, and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority took care of the animal. The owner feared that Niño would be euthanized.
– The serval will be increased and relocated to a suitable place where the living environment and existence are adapted to the animal’s needs. We currently do not want to go out with specific locations that have been assessed, writes section manager Kjerstin Helene Kolvik Iversen in the Norwegian Food Safety Authority’s section for land animals in Sunnhordland and Haugalandet in an email to VG.
However, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority emphasizes in the letter to the owner that the serval will be euthanized if the relocation does not go well.
The animal park in Kristiansand has previously said they will consider accepting the serval if they receive such an inquiry.
