The Norwegian Directorate of Health can issue a fee for violations of the Alcohol Act

This applies, among other things, to breaches of the ban on alcohol advertising, breaches of rules for the production of alcohol and breaches of rules for the supply of privately imported alcohol.

This is stated by the Norwegian Directorate of Health websites.

In the past, the Directorate has only had the opportunity to demand correction of the offence, and a compulsory fine if the correction does not take place within a given deadline. Now, however, the offense itself can be sanctioned.

Can decide how big the fee should be

The Norwegian Directorate of Health must assess whether an actor should receive a fee, and how large the fee should be, based on the seriousness of the offence.

Fees for violations of the Alcohol Act can only be given for violations that were committed or are ongoing after the rules were introduced on 17 September this year.

Secretary General Ragnhild Kaski of the alcovet organization Av-og-til is very satisfied with the new regulations.

– This was about time! We are happy that breaking the alcohol law will finally cost money. This is a victory, not least for children and young people who are daily exposed to alcohol advertising in social media, says Kaski.

Demanding to follow up the ban

She points out that it has been difficult to follow up on the advertising ban as there have been hardly any consequences for breaking it. In addition, there has been little likelihood of being caught for violations.

– Social media has been a free zone. Those who have profited from it are those who make money from alcohol and who break the law. Those who have lost out are mostly Norwegians, and those in the industry who follow the legislation, says Kaski.
