This spring, the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture has set reduced customs rates for the import of eggs in order to overcome the lack of eggs in Norwegian shops. In the period from 20 February to 1 April, the duty on eggs was removed, but a duty of NOK 1.50 per kilo was reintroduced on 2 April.
From 14 May, the duty on imports of eggs and whole egg mass will be removed once more until 24 June, the Directorate of Agriculture itself states in a press release.
– The April figures are not yet clear, but it is expected that imports will be close to Nortura’s forecast of 1,000 tonnes. It is nevertheless expected that there will be a little too few eggs in the market also in the period from May to August. In order to cover the deficit in 2024, more than 2,000 tonnes of eggs must be imported, the Directorate of Agriculture states.
According to Nortura’s latest forecasts, there will probably be a shortage of Norwegian eggs in the shops for the rest of the year.
– Norway needs more egg producers. In an attempt to recruit more people, Nortura has increased the price we pay for the eggs of our producers. We hope that this leads to more people establishing themselves, and that egg production goes up and deliveries from Nortura increase, said communications advisor Matilda Aronsson at Nortura at the beginning of May when the forecasts were presented.
