Gary Alazraki, the director and producer of the iconic Mexican film “Nosotros los Nobles” still remembers how the idea of reprising this story, based on “The Great Calavera” by Adolfo Torrado, arose from his university notes.
“In the comedy film class I pointed out that the cinema that had to be made was the one that contrasted the lower class with the upper class, because it was the cinema that was made in the great depression of Hollywood when the middle class imploded and then you had these two social classes facing each other,” recalls Alazraki.
The film, which became one of the films with the most viewers in Mexico and Latin America, according to the Mexican Institute of Cinematography, with 7 million viewers, tells the story of Germán Noble (Gonzalo Vega), a rich and widowed businessman who He realizes that his children Javier (Luis Gerardo Méndez), Bárbara (Karla Souza) and Carlos (Juan Pablo Gil) are not doing anything with their life and only relying on him, so he creates a plan to teach them a lesson.
“I wanted my film to fit into the world narrative of what classic cinema was, my theory was like Hollywood in Spanish and my calculation was ‘if we reach 80 million pesos at the box office, we can start to build a company that jumps between film and television and we can dedicate ourselves to this, because I no longer wanted to do commercials,” recalls the producer.
Gary’s film is the second highest-grossing Mexican film, with revenues of 327.52 million pesos. Now, to celebrate the 11th anniversary of its release, it will return to movie theaters this April 11.
“It changed my life because Hollywood spoke on the phone and gave me a career. And this opportunity arose to make an international series with Netflix (“Club de Cuervos”) and as I said, that was the plan, to jump from movies to TV back and forth and there is no cooler thing or better opportunity than doing that with a great company,” he acknowledges.
