The French Pierre Agostini, the Austrian-Hungarian Ferenc Krausz and the Franco-Swedish Anne L’Huillier they won on Tuesday Nobel Prize in Physics by the study of the movement of electrons within atoms and molecules.
The atomic physicists were distinguished “for experimental methods that generate attosecond light pulses for the study of electron dynamics in matter,” the jury explained.
The attosecond is with respect to the second, what the second represents with respect to 30,000 million years.
The trio “has demonstrated a way of creating extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy,” the jury added.
“The contributions of the laureates have enabled the investigation of processes that are so rapid that they were previously impossible to follow,” he continued.
Pierre Agostini is a professor at Ohio State University in the United States, while Ferenc Krausz is director of the Max Planck Institute in Germany.
Anne L’Huillier, only the fifth woman to receive this award since its creation in 1901, is a professor at Lund University in Sweden.
“I am very excited (…) There are not many women who get this award so it is very, very special,” said L’Huillier, who received the call from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in the middle of a class. “It was difficult to finish it,” she admitted.
The 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine went to two researchers for the Covid-19 vaccine
The winning trio will receive 11 million Swedish crowns (regarding one million dollars) and the award from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at a ceremony in Stockholm on Dec. 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of award creator Alfred Nobel.
Last year, the Swedish Academy rewarded the Frenchman Alain Aspect, to the American John Clausery to Austrian Anton Zeilingerpioneers of the revolutionary mechanisms of quantum physics.
On Monday the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to the Hungarian Katalin Kariko and the American Drew Weissman for his work in the development of messenger RNA vaccines, decisive in the fight once morest covid-19.
The Nobel announcement season will continue with Chemistry on Wednesday, Literature on Thursday and Peace on Friday, from Oslo. On Monday, October 9, the award will be revealed. Economythe last to be created.
