The NHL’s Decision on Pride Nights and the Impact on Special Events: A Deep Dive

One of the topics on the agenda at the NHL Governors’ meeting centered around the debacle surrounding some of the Pride Nights hosted by the various teams during the 2022-2023 season.

Faced with the refusal of some players to wear the jersey bearing the image of the Pride movement, the Bettman circuit ruled that such celebrations would not take place next year.

This measure also concerns the various events marked by the wearing of special vests, including that of “Hockey Fights Cancer”, appreciation of the military forces and Saint-Patrick’s Day.

“It’s become a distraction and casts a shadow over the fact that all of our clubs, in one way or another, have parties that are meant to honor groups or causes. We prefer that these continue to receive the appropriate attention, rather than being a distraction,” Bettman said.

The long-time commissioner, however, clarified that Pride parties, as well as the sale of jerseys in team stores, will be able to continue.

Separately, it was reported that Players Association Executive Director Marty Walsh stressed the importance of returning NHL players to the Winter Olympics, noting that it is seen as a “priority.” by the players.
