Smart #3The new Smart is almost as long as a Mercedes GLA
Smart is still gaining in size: the SUV coupe, Smart #3, from the brand that originally built micro-city cars, is 13 centimeters longer than its predecessor, the Smart #1.
Smart, once known as the original Swiss manufacturer of microcars, unveils its second new model, the #3 crossover coupé. This sporty version of the #1, with a more conventional design, was presented in a world premiere at the Shanghai Motor Show. The European premiere will be held in the fall, at the IAA in Munich.
“Our goal has always been to meet varied and changing mobility needs,” says Dirk Adelmann, Head of Smart Europe. And to add: “That is why Smart will continue to expand its production in order to offer a variety of vehicles that perfectly suit different customer groups and lifestyles”. The #3 was designed by partner Mercedes, while the technology is from Geely, the joint venture’s Chinese partner.
The passenger compartment differs from that of its predecessor only by the three round air vents.

The Smart #3 falls into the category of hatchback SUVs, those tall vehicles with a coupé-like roofline, currently in vogue. With its 4.40 meters long, it exceeds its predecessor by 13 centimeters. It has nevertheless lost height, but gained muscle and width at the sides, which gives it sportier proportions and gives it its own identity in terms of design. In the passenger compartment, it stands out, among other things, from the Smart #1 by the round air vents.
Smart should offer the new coupé equipped, like the #1, with a 100% electric rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, in a power range from 200 kW/272 hp to 315 kW/428 hp. The starting price of the crossover built in China should be around 50,000 francs. Official data relating to its market launch, which should take place at the end of the year, are already available.
The German-Chinese manufacturer is careful, for the time being, to communicate the technical details. However, these should not be fundamentally different from those of #1.
