For separated parents, blended families with children educated in two different communities or French-speaking teachers whose children go to school in Flanders or vice versa, the organization of holidays has become considerably more complex.
Sibel, a young divorced mother, will have to give up going on vacation with her new companion. “I am a divorced mother and I have my children the first two weeks of July and August every other year and the other year the last two weeks. The new calendar has a great impact on us because it is really not easy to organize with the other parent. In addition, I have rebuilt my life and my companion has his children in Dutch education so whether it is at the beginning or at the end of the holidays, we have difficulties to organize ourselves and find a date community that suits everyone because”, she explains. Result ? The two lovers will have to opt for a separate vacation. “At times we have to do without joint vacations and each leave separately with their children. Life is already complicated enough for us separated parents who can only count on us for the organization of vacations.”, she sighs.
Given the new school calendar, many schools are modifying their June exam sessions. But not all…
Same problem for Astrid, mother of three children. “We are a blended family with three children on each side, three of whom go to school in Brussels: one in Dutch in Brussels and two in French in Brussels as well. The other three children go to school in Knokke, in Dutch. Result? We we can’t have a family vacation anymore. We can’t even go on the first and July anymore or just be together on vacation”she laments.
