The new PS5 with external disk drive comes into focus

Rumors are getting clearer around a new, easier-to-produce PlayStation 5 model for Sony. The disk drive would be sold as an option.

For several months, the rumor of a new model of PlayStation 5 circulating. This would be the first redesign in the life of the console, which has already seen internal design changes to facilitate its production.

The objective sought by Sony, like any console manufacturer, is always the same: to facilitate the manufacture of the console to lower its construction price, have more stock, and therefore increase the company’s profits.

A launch at the end of 2023

According to Tom Henderson, for the site Insider GamingSony would like to launch this new model of PS5 during its fiscal year 2023, that is to say between March 2023 and March 2024, more probably around the start of the school year in September.

This new model of PS5 would be distinguished from the two consoles that we currently know by the use of an external disk drive to be connected via USB-C. The console would have the right to a new USB-C port on the back to do so.

For Sony, this means that the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will now be a single, mass-produced console. Only the presence of an external disk drive in the box can make the difference. Manufacturing steps for the brand which is still struggling to supply the market as much as it would like.

Tom Henderson is already known in the community for numerous leaks, particularly concerning Battlefield and Call of Duty licenses. It remains to be seen whether his sources will prove to be as reliable concerning Sony. All this remains to be proven.

A console already in some hands

Still according to Tom Henderson on Twitter, the new console would already be in the hands of some users, probably Sony employees at this stage. The console would work “without problem” and Sony should formalize the machine soon.

Small update on the PlayStation 5 that has a detachable disc drive – I’ve heard from two people now that the test kit is in people’s hands and it “works flawlessly”. We should hear more about it officially soon.https://t.co/2rzlDrjYAb

If a release is really planned for September for this revision of the console, it is difficult to imagine Sony revealing it long in advance. Something doesn’t quite seem to fit into Tom Henderson’s schedule. It only remains to wait to discover the end word.
