Scottish Minister Nicola Sturgeon has claimed that newly elected UK Prime Minister Liz Truss will be a disaster not only for Scotland but for the whole of the UK. The response comes in response to a Sunday Times report suggesting Truss’ team is considering raising the vote threshold for a second Scottish independence referendum.
The Sunday Times reports that the Truss is looking to pass a new law banning another independence referendum until polls show that 60% of the Scottish population support a new referendum for at least a year. “If Liz governs as she campaigned over the summer, she will be a disaster not only for Scotland but for the whole of the UK,” Sturgeon said.
“Just because you fear losing a democratic contest is not an excuse or acceptable to rewrite the rules of democracy,” said Sturgeon, who wants to hold a second referendum in October. In a 2014 referendum, Scots voted 55% to 44% to remain in the UK, but following Brexit, Sturgeon renewed his push for independence for Scotland.
