A Colombian island has become the new route used by migrants who arrive in the country seeking to reach the United States.

Colombia has become one of the countries that is part of the migration route to the north of the continent, as it is one of the obligatory steps to go from South America to Central America.

The Darién Gap is by far one of the busiest routes for migrants from around the world, with more than 2,000 travelers per day.

However, the level of difficulty represented by the Darién Gap has caused some people to look for other alternatives.

Taking a boat for several hours to San Andrés Island has become the other alternative used to get from Colombia to Central America.

Although it may represent fewer risks, between 2022 and 2023 more than 1,100 people who have been abandoned on the high seas have been rescued, and 74 migrants have disappeared.

The Attorney General’s Office has requested the ChancelleryMigración Colombia and the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF) to comply with a series of recommendations that allow facing the migration crisis in said area.
