The British brand MG, now part of the Chinese concern SAIC, showed the third generation compact hatchback MG3 in Geneva. It did not become an electric car, but its hybrid powertrain uses an electric motor that is more powerful than a gasoline one.

Even though MG belongs to the Chinese and the new product will be produced in China, it is primarily aimed at the European market. And it is argued that the model has retained the traditional MG driver’s character.

This model belongs to the B-class, although with the change of generations the dimensions have grown and reached 4113 × 1797 × 1502 mm. The wheelbase is now 2570 mm.

There is no purely electric version, not even a plug-in hybrid; the new MG3 will debut with a Hybrid+ powerplant. In it, the electric part dominates over the gasoline part (but still, this is not the case when a traditional internal combustion engine only works to recharge the traction battery and has no connection with the wheels, as, for example, on Evolute models). Here is a traditional parallel hybrid, the wheels are rotated by both an electric motor and a gasoline engine. The first is used mainly for acceleration, and the second is used to maintain a constant speed, operating in economical mode at low speeds.

The 1.5 four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, operating on the Atkinson cycle, develops 102 hp. and 128 Nm. And the electric motor built into the three-speed automatic transmission produces 136 hp. and 250 Nm. Peak total power – 194 hp. This is enough to reach 100 km/h in 8 seconds.
