The Apple’s SOS function has just proven itself. Indeed, a man found himself stranded in a rural area in Alaska.
In the early morning hours of December 1, Alaska State Rescue received word that a man was stranded and likely in danger. The latter was traveling by snowmobile between Noorvik and Kotzebue. The man was in a cold, isolated place with no connection, and he activated the emergency SOS function via satellite on his iPhone 14 to alert authorities to his predicament.
Relief impressed by communication by satellite
The man was successfully rescued and has no injuries. It was in a remote area and on the fringes of areas where satellite connectivity is available. Indeed, it was located in a rural area (northern region of Canada), far from any network coverage.
The officers involved in the rescue were “impressed with the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the information included in the initial alert”. Indeed, the Emergency SOS function via Satellite is designed to ask several questions before sending the alert in order to speed up rescue missions.
As a reminder, several European countries can also take advantage of this new feature.
