The « Quiet mode » appeared on Instagram, one of the most used social networks internationally. But what is it?
The Quiet mode, translated silent mode in French limits notifications from Instagram. Once the option is activated, your contacts will receive a message warning them that this mode is activated and therefore you have not yet seen their message.
Quiet mode: an impact of social networks on mental health
Liza Crenshaw, spokesperson for Meta, explains, “The app will prompt teens to turn on the mode when they spend a specific amount of time on Instagram late at night.”
This may allow some (especially young people) to realize the time they spend on social networks. With, as we know, a negative impact on mental health, especially with the images conveyed of perfect bodies. As RTBF recalls, in 2021, internal documents unveiled by a whistleblower revealed that Meta had found that Instagram worsened the body image problems of one in three girls and that some teenage girls felt “addicted” of the app.
Just launched in the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and Canada, “Quiet Mode” should soon be available everywhere.
