the new book format that combines electronic and paper

The format that unites the best of its predecessors

among some of the advantages offered by e-books is its size, therefore, its ease of moving and the little space it occupies in a house. However, they also tend to have their low point in the fatigue that it can cause in the eyes of the readers. Other people directly reject them and get nostalgic with them. the feel of the paper while reading.

With the aim of combining the advantages of both formats, electronic books were created that use augmented reality and allow users to activate digital content with simple gestures. Just by sliding a finger over a specific word or phrase, you can view multimedia content and additional information in a device that can be positioned next to the paper book and will allow you to contextualize your reading.

As part of the project to develop Next Generation Paperthe team of researchers developed a physical marker with hidden electronic components able to recognize optical patterns on the pages of books. This can be placed on a certain page and send, in turn, relevant information regarding reading to another screen.

This bookmark connects to an electronic system on the cover of the book and, thanks to a series of light sensors that it integrates, it can detect individual codes printed on each page of the copy. At the moment this is being used in a design project called “The Climate Domesday Book”, which generates a media interaction with the reproduction of a video or an audio on a screen while the user is reading regarding a certain topic.
