BMW has completed winter testing of the third-generation X1 crossover and shared photos from the Swedish test site. Although, in fact, these pictures are a little more informative than those that the photo spies took back in 2020: in the summer, the basic BMW X1 with an internal combustion engine, and in autumn – electric BMW iX1. Now the cars have preserved not only a colorful camouflage film, but also masking linings on the body.
As in the case with new “seven”, modifications with different power plants will be almost the same from the outside. With the change of generation, the BMW X1 will retain the overall proportions of the body and the traditional configuration of the headlights: a new face with double-deck optics relies only on the largest and most expensive BMW models. However, the nostrils will become larger, and the door handles are now with recessed keys.
The regular BMW X1 will retain the transverse-engined UKL platform and will be available in petrol, diesel and hybrid versions. And the electric BMW iX1 will get fifth-generation eDrive technology – from the same series as the iX or i4 models, but more modestly. It has already been announced that the twin-engine all-wheel drive crossover will be able to travel 413-438 km on a single charge (according to the WLTP cycle). For example, a Mercedes-Benz EQB with all-wheel drive, similar in size, has a passport range of 395-423 km.
The debut of the new family is scheduled for this fall. The production of all modifications will be established at the same plant in Regensburg, Germany, where the second-generation X1 is now being made. And at the end of 2024, the BMW iX1 will be the first model on the assembly line of the new enterprise. iFactory near the city of Debrecen in northern Hungary. The construction of the plant will begin on June 1 this year.
