Formula 1 returns this weekend to Albert Park. After two seasons without visiting Australia, the ‘Grand Circus’ will celebrate the third Grand Prix of the 2021 season on a circuit with big changes.
Albert Park presents a remodeling that will premiere Formula 1 this weekend. The Australian layout has been modified with the aim of creating more overtaking opportunities and hosting more competitive races. What’s more, the renewed layout will have four DRS zones.
Of the 16 curves that the circuit traditionally had, seven have been modified and two have been removed entirely. Much of the change has focused on widen curves to generate more overtaking zones.
Turn 1 has been widened by 2.5 meters on the right hand side, the same as Turn 6 which has been widened to 7.5 metres, and Turn 15 – which will now be 13 – has been widened by 3.5 metres.
In addition to modifying the width of the curves, positive superelevations have also been introduced at turns 3 and 13, which have also been widened by 4 and 3 meters respectively.

These remodelings will allow for different lines and look for areas where it was not possible to overtake before, now it is, since the rider who goes on the inside will have a more difficult time defending the position.
But the most significant change has been made in turns 9 and 10, which have been eliminated giving rise to a straight line. In this way, the layout is reduced to 14 curves and a new DRS zone has been created.

Likewise, the works have also included a pit lane remodelwhich has been enlarged 2 meters.
So, with all these changes, it is expected that lap time in qualifying decrease approximately 5 seconds —from 1’21″00 to 1’15″08—. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the maximum speed increase 15 kilometers per hourup to 251 kilometers per hour, with a maximum speed of 330.
