The Netherlands turned around and won – ready for the semi-finals

Incredible drama in Berlin.
The Netherlands turned around and won – now the semi-final once morest England awaits.

Right at the beginning of the match, the Netherlands had a good chance, Depay got through nicely from the edge, but just like during large parts of the championship, the striker did not get the finish. Depay also got the second chance of the match, but even in the 6th minute he failed to finish.

Turkey’s first finish on goal was Ozcan, who plays everyday at home in Borussia Dortmund, but the central midfielder failed to score.

Just like in the round of 16 once morest Austria, Turkey were also dangerous in set-piece situations, in the 29th minute Bardakci had a good chance from a pass from Calhanoglu, but the centre-back mightn’t get the ball on target.

Turkey lined up corners in the first half and in connection with the fourth they also got a dividend. The corner itself went to Arda Güler, who with an elegant cross poked the forehead of Akaydin, who calmly headed in 1-0 to Turkey.

Akaydin’s headed goal was also the only one of the first half, as Turkey went into the break with a 1–0 lead.

Directly into the second half, Ronald Koeman chose to make a substitution, Wout Weghorst was replaced, Steve Bergwijn went out.

Weghorst caused a lot of trouble immediately following the throw-in, but the first really dangerous chance of the second half fell to Turkey and Arda Güler. The giant talent hit the post with a free kick in the 55th minute.

Unfortunately for Güler and Turkey, a 2-0 goal would have been much needed, as in the 71st minute de Vrij got on top of a cross and headed in 1-1.

After the 1-1 goal, the Netherlands pressed on and shortly following de Vrij’s goal, Cody Gakpo, via Mert Muldur, scored 2-1 from close range.

However, Turkey did not give up and with a little over five minutes remaining, Ven and de Vrij each made very important blocks.

The Turks pressed hard in the final minutes and Cenk Tosun among others had a very good chance, but the striker’s header went just wide and in the 91st minute Verbruggen made an incredible save.

The last chance of the game fell to Calhanoglu, but the Turkish star saw his finish blocked by Dumfries and the Netherlands managed to keep out.

The final result was 2–1 and now the semi-final once morest England awaits on Wednesday.
