ALGIERS – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has begun preparations for the 2023-2024 Plowing-Semailles campaign through several measures, including the provision, free of charge, of seeds and fertilizers to support farmers affected by the lack of rain, in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, we learned on Saturday in Algiers, from a ministry official.

The Director of the regulation and development of agricultural production at the ministry, Messaoud Bendridi, explained in a statement to the press on the sidelines of a meeting of sector executives, that “the ministry has started preparations for the plowing campaign -2023/2024 sowing, taking all measures to permanently support all farmers and producers, while applying the instructions of the President of the Republic relating to the provision of inputs, seeds and fertilizers free of charge to farmers affected by the shortage of rains in 37 wilayas.

In this context, Mr. Bendridi indicated that technical meetings had recently been held with all the directors of cereal and legume cooperatives, as well as with the directors of agricultural services in order to ensure the implementation of these instructions. and to take note of the measures taken to postpone the repayment period of the “Rfig” loan for producers to three years.

The measures taken by local agricultural services to provide the water resources and facilities necessary for the development of all agricultural sectors, both in the north of the country and in the South, were also examined, while ensuring that they support crops. strategic strategies that the agriculture and rural development sector intends to develop in the southern wilayas, in particular cereal crops of durum wheat and barley, as well as oilseed crops of sunflower and fodder corn, added the same official , asserting that all these measures fit into one category, namely achieving self-sufficiency.

Regarding the policy put in place by the ministry to deal with the lack of rain, Mr. Bendridi revealed that the ministry would continue to exploit water sources in the southern wilayas in order to continue the development of cereal farming, which has enabled to provide significant production during the previous season with the emergence of leading wilayas in this area.

Regarding the regions located in the north, he stressed that additional irrigation and rainfall will be used to increase agricultural yield and production, and therefore achieve complementarity between the southern and northern zones of the country in seed production as well as in the production of hard and soft wheat and barley.

On the other hand, the manager reassured that all measures would be taken to support all farmers by providing them with inputs and seeds, by facilitating procedures with irrigation services to obtain authorizations for drilling wells, as well as with the energy and mining services regarding the electrical connection of agricultural operations.
