Ways to fail

Stakeholders revealed that a majority (14.6%) of vehicles failed the NCT test due to steering and suspension issues. Lighting-electrical failures accounted for the second most failures (14.3%). 11.7% of vehicles failed the side slip test. 10% of vehicles were derailed due to faulty wheels and tires and 9.6% due to brake failure.

Chevrolet in defeat, Porsche in victory

Most of the vehicles that failed the test (69%) were Chevrolet cars. Other cars reported are Chrysler (61%), Citroen (58%), Daihatsu (57%) and Saab (55%). Among the test winners, Porsche tops the list (65%). Lexus (62%), Seat (59%), Land Rover (58%) and Hyundai (57%) are the other winners. Last year, Ford had the highest number of vehicles that came to the test. Of the 1,71,129 Ford models tested, 50% failed due to lighting electrical faults.

NCT and Aplus

NCT was established in 2000. This was aimed at reducing the number of road accident deaths. NCT should be carried out every two years for vehicles less than 10 years old and every year for vehicles following 10 years to detect faults in vehicles such as broken brakes, worn tires and faulty headlights.

The tests in Ireland are carried out by the Spanish company Aplus. The company was fined €3 million last year for failing to carry out tests on time.

Vehicle test must be done within 12 days of application. But there was a complaint that the test might not be conducted even following waiting for 19 days.

Aplus says the failure rate has not changed significantly. Almost 50% of the vehicles used to fail the test. The company also explains that the success rate has increased only during the Covid period.

Aplus that the problem is solved

The company says the waiting list for NCT appointments has been resolved before Christmas. Mechanics have also been recruited from the Philippines to address staff shortages in Ireland.

They conducted 1.6 million tests in 2023. 200,000 more vehicle tests than in 2021 and 2022. The company claims that last year was also the most testing of vehicles in the history of NCT.
