While the NBA regular season is due to begin in a little over a month, the great saga of the summer – namely the transfer of Damian Lillard – is struggling to conclude. And one of the reasons that could explain this is that certain NBA franchises potentially interested in Dame’s services prefer to keep their assets to position themselves on other files (Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, etc.) which could soon ignite the Great League.

Joel Embiid is another blase who quickly comes to mind given the evolution of the situation at the Sixers, where his All-Star teammate James Harden requested his transfer during the summer. Finally, we also think of Luka Doncic, who could have desires elsewhere if he continues to lack support among the Mavs after their terrible 2022-23 season.
Giannis, Embiid, Luka: all of these guys were named to the All-NBA First Team last season, all of these guys are at least four years younger than Lillard, all of these guys will probably be more dominant than Dame in future seasons. Hence this hesitation that some teams have before really taking a chance on Dame.
So of course, maybe the three superstars just mentioned will never be available in the future, while Damian Lillard wants to leave Portland ASAP. But perhaps it is better to leave the door open just in case, rather than getting a 33-year-old star like Lillard who also only has Miami in his sights…
