The Africa regional director of ”The Nature Conservancy (TNC)”, a group specializing in the protection of the ecosystem, Ademola Ajagbe, during a working session with the Prime Minister, Raymond Ndong Sima, presented to the Head of government the missions of this structure which has a commitment of 30% of Gabon’s marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystem to be protected by 2030 and for which The Nature Conservancy has an envelope of 2 million US dollars or 1 billion 400 million 800 thousand FCFA to finance its projects relating to the preservation of biodiversity and the problem of human-wildlife conflict.
During this meeting, Ademola Ajagbe requested from the Gabonese authorities the establishment of an interministerial committee with a view to defining together the essential projects to be financed which take into account the aspects raised.
TNC is indeed one of the largest non-profit conservation organizations in the world. Its main mission is to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends. It is in this respect that the government of Gabon announced a few years ago its intention to implement a global conservation and sustainable development plan aimed at protecting the ecosystem, while ensuring the transition from the country’s oil economy to one focused on natural resource management.
Interested in this plan, TNC set up a project called the Permanent Financing Project (PFP) established on a national scale. It involves a conservation planning phase before the single closure (estimated in 2025), during which the protected areas, the activities to be financed and the conditions and commitment of the agreement will be established and agreed by key stakeholders.
With this amount and the establishment of an interministerial committee in a few weeks, this organization will be able to deploy on the ground and achieve the objectives it has set, namely training, infrastructure, technology and many priorities defined in the community plan and the conservation plan.
The Prime Minister of the Transition, who said he was in favor of such an approach by The Nature Conservancy, reiterated the commitment of his government and therefore that of the President of the Transition, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who places an important place on actions to preserve the Gabonese ecosystem. This is especially true since our country has remained, for many years, one of the leaders in the conservation of natural resources. Likewise, he reminded his interlocutors of the need to take considerable account of the problem of man-wildlife conflict with regard to the evolution of the pachyderm population and the consequent financial compensation for the states whose efforts in terms of conservation of biodiversity are recognized because, he concluded, “it is all of humanity that wins.”
