He said that 25 players will go to the championship – three goalkeepers, eight defenders and 14 forwards, but not all of them will be included in the squad yet. The captain of the team will be Kaspars Daugavins, his assistants will be Rodrigo Abols and Robert Bukarts.
The Latvian team will go to the championship for the first time as a medal winner, but, as Vitolins said, this is already history and today everything needs to start once more.
“The past is wonderful, but we live in the present and the future. The team has seven debutants, five of them are students, and this has never happened before. This is a completely different team, but with good character. The team has a fantastic atmosphere and is ready write a new chapter in the history of Latvian hockey,” said Vitolins.
The Ice Hockey World Championship will be held in Prague and Ostrava from May 10 to 26.
The Latvian national team will leave for the Czech Republic on May 9.
The first opponent of the Latvian national team in subgroup B in Ostrava on May 11 will be the Polish national team. On May 12, Latvia will play with France, on May 14 – with Kazakhstan, on May 15 – with Germany, on May 18 – with Sweden, on May 19 – with Slovakia, and Latvia will play the final match of the group tournament on May 21 once morest the US team, which they beat last year in bronze medal match.
All matches will be broadcast live on LTV7 channel.
