The National Museum in Alexandria.. A timber merchant’s palace contains 1,800 rare artifacts

1- The National Museum is located at the beginning of El Horreya Road (Fouad Street).

2- It is a palace built in the modern Italian style, and it was owned by the wealthy Asaad Basili Pasha, one of the most important wood traders in Alexandria..

3- The construction of the palace was completed in 1928, and the area of ​​the palace was regarding 4000 meters. The ground floor of the palace was used in the past as a hideout in the days of World War II, and the palace has a large garden.

4- In 1953, the palace was sold to the American Consulate, which continued to occupy it until 1996. Then the Supreme Council of Antiquities bought it and turned it into a museum that was opened on September 1, 2003, to be the first national museum in a series of national museums being established in the governorates of Egypt.

5- This museum includes regarding 1,800 artifacts covering all ages, from the ancient state to the modern era.

6- The artifacts embody Egypt’s civilization, culture, arts and industries during these ages. These artifacts were brought from several museums, including the Egyptian Museum, the Islamic Museum, the Coptic Museum in Cairo, the Greco-Roman Museum, the sunken antiquities and the Islamic antiquities in Alexandria.

7- The museum is divided into three floors, the ground floor displays pieces dating back to the Pharaonic era, and the first floor includes pieces dating back to the Greco-Roman era and some pieces of sunken antiquities, and the second floor.

8- It includes pieces dating back to the Coptic, Islamic, modern and contemporary eras.

9- The museum is characterized by not being interested in the works of kings 10- The museum is interested in what the Egyptian made throughout the ages and is characterized by displaying pharaonic monuments linked to the city of Alexandria.
