The new institution will be established in the premises of the Kaunas Central Post Office, and will start its activities from January next year. However, the Ministry of Culture emphasizes that the NAI might only function fully following the above-mentioned building is repaired. This is planned to be done in 2027.
It is planned that the institute will organize architectural art and architectural heritage exhibitions, seminars, lectures, other events, establish architectural art awards, seek to involve the public in urban planning processes, collect and present relevant statistical information on architectural art to the public.
The new budgetary institution should also carry out research on architectural art and heritage, publish and distribute research, educational, information and advertising publications, and present Lithuanian architecture abroad.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the establishment of NAI aims to “develop the public’s concept of architectural art and architectural heritage, to reveal its origins, distinctiveness, cultural value, connections with world cultural and artistic processes, to promote public activity by participating in the formation of a quality environment”.
It is planned that the Institute of Architecture will have up to 20 positions.
The institution’s budget for the coming year already provides 111 thousand. euros for the start of the institution’s activities. In 2024, the Ministry of Culture intends to increase these funds taking into account the schedule of hiring employees and ongoing activities.
When the institute starts operating in the reconstructed central post office of Kaunas, it is planned that it will receive regarding 300,000 from the rent of premises and services. EUR of income per year, which can be directed to the operation of the institution, maintenance of the building and salaries of employees.
The maintenance costs of the institution should reach regarding 650,000 when it is fully established. euros per year.
