The national coach defends his captain with all his might!
Recently there has been clear criticism of Joshua Kimmich (28) and the way he interprets his midfield role. Among other things, record national player Lothar Matthäus had said in SPORT BILD: “The people next to him have recently been constantly worse: it doesn’t matter whether it’s Goretzka, Sabitzer or Gravenberch. Because they had to do unfamiliar work for Kimmich.”
Now Hansi Flick (58) strikes back! He gave an incendiary speech for Kimmich: “People like to lift players up towards the sun and when they’re having a bad phase, we watch them burn up. I also want to talk to Jo Kimmich because it is important to me. Jo was a world-class player nine months ago and now he’s making players worse. These are things that I understand like a glove. Jo has a mentality, he always wants the best, he always wants to win. He has the mentality of wanting to win, he does everything to achieve that, in every training session, every day, in every game. He also has the right to have a bad phase.”
Flick even draws a special comparison: “The mentality he has, Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan had. To go ahead and say, ‘Okay, I’ll do whatever it takes to bring out the best in me.’ This makes him a role model for all players. That’s why I would like to see that in a phase where things aren’t going well, considering the circumstances at the club. It’s more than understandable that you have a bad phase.”
When asked once more if he was worried regarding his captain, Flick replied: “I’m not worried regarding him at all. He doesn’t always succeed in everything, but he brings a good mentality to the pitch, I’m not worried.”
Flick generally places himself fully in front of the players: “We addressed the mistakes. It’s regarding how we go into duels. We have to fight more. We have to put up with criticism. It’s also okay if it’s focused on me personally. But please let the players out. We are convinced of our path.”
