The now former candidate of Unión por la Ciudad, Leandro Santoro, announced that he was lowering his candidacy for the head of Government with a statement from UxP.
The decision, as I can find out Perfil, was made by Sergio Massa, the deputy chief of staff and coordinator of the national campaign, Juan Manuel Olmos, and Santoro himself this Tuesday.
The conversations had begun on Sunday, in Complex C in Chacarita, when Massa and Santoro had begun to evaluate the possibility of giving up a second round given the close numbers. Although Santoro grew significantly compared to the PASO, Jorge Macri was one hundredths away from avoiding a second round.
Santoro contacted Jorge Macri to inform him of the decision.
The move has a clear objective: to demobilize the PRO in its electoral stronghold and prevent the yellow party from moving its electoral apparatus. According to calculations, Jorge Macri (who will now be head of Government) had not spoken in favor of Javier Milei beyond a series of flirtations. Going to a runoff would have forced the elected mayor to play with the libertarian. Milei, on Sunday night in his speech, did nothing more than “congratulate” the PRO candidate, in a clear wink and open the game to Together for Change.
Local Peronists believe that the future of Argentina is at stake, and that today efforts must be concentrated on the second round that Massa and Milei will contest on November 19.
The decision made by Massa, Olmos and Santoro was communicated behind closed doors today, Tuesday, and was reflected in the statement that circulated online and was signed by many City leaders.
In this scenario, the City’s Peronists are satisfied with what has been done and the contribution made to the national campaign. Although they know that in CABA the average vote for Peronism is always lower than the national one, this time they were only 5 points away.
They managed to obtain four seats of deputies for the City (repeating the performance of 2019), 10 Buenos Aires legislators and retain Commune 8. Commune 4 is in dispute (there is a difference of 1000 votes) and tomorrow the final scrutiny begins in the Buenos Aires Legislature.
