The dancers of the National Ballet of Ukraine made spectators at the Grand Theater cry on Monday evening during the first of their Canadian tour, with a number that plunged us into the heart of the war raging in their country.
Under blood-red lighting, accompanied by the dramatic and tragic piece Tearfulby Mozart, the dancers performed with an intensity and emotion that even showed in their faces.
Throughout this performance, images of different cities in Ukraine that were ravaged by Russian attacks, such as Mariupol and Bakhmut, among others, flashed in the background.
Tears flowed freely in the room following this intense moment, which went well beyond art and culture.
No need to be a ballet fan
Aside from the powerful war number, which clearly stood out from the rest, spectators were treated to a simply exquisite spectacle.
You don’t have to be a ballet fan to appreciate the precision and grace in the movements of Ukrainian dancers. They propelled themselves through the air with power, spinning around in mid-flight, and landed on the stage so elegantly that it looked like they were on a cloud.
From classic tutus, to traditional Ukrainian clothes, including majestic white dresses, the costumes also added a beautiful touch of aesthetics to this performance.
The National Ballet of Ukraine will once once more present its show on Tuesday at the Grand Théâtre de Québec. He will then take charge of the Théâtre St-Denis, in Montreal, from January 17 to 20.
