5 years ago now, League of Legends celebrated its 10th anniversary. On this occasion, the developers made numerous announcements, including the arrival of new titles in the MOBA universe. In the lot, the famous Project L, a fighting game which is revealed a little more today via a new trailer. However, one change should be noted: its name, a name which is not unanimous within the community.
From Project L to… 2XKO
Riot Games’ versus fighting finally has its definitive name: 2XKO (pronounced as it is written according to the developers). A choice which is not clearly explained by the studio.
This year we are entering a new phase of development. Our development team has grown significantly since we last spoke, and things are really picking up. We still have a lot of work left, but we’re far enough along to start sharing more with you in the coming year.
We’re building an ever-evolving fighting game for fans of the genre, and it’s promising!

The developers also explain that they have carefully analyzed player feedback since last year’s EVO (where the game was tested), and intend to give more opportunities to players to try it, in order to refine it. Several demos will therefore be available during the year (like at the next EVO in Japan), but not only during major events. The team promises to give a lot of information this year, and hopes release the game in 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.
In terms of gameplay, the short trailer does not give much more information regarding the game, or even the characters that we will find in 2XKO. We can see Ekko, Ahri, Yasuo, and Illaoi. Note, however, the arena, a tavern in the atmosphere of Bilgewater, rather stylish we must admit.
A name that does not convince
But what players are most upset regarding is of course the name of the game. Many simply don’t understand it – and believe that it is unpronounceable – especially since the developers haven’t really explained their choice. The players did not hesitate long before expressing their dissatisfaction in the comments.
- “Am I the only one who doesn’t really understand the name? Project L sounded a lot cooler. You should have stuck with that.”
- “I preferred Project L.”
- “The name is horrible”
In the end, the name is logical: 2X (since you can play it in teams of two) ending with KO (well, a fighting game, we’re not going to explain any further). In any case, the name will not change, and players will therefore have to get used to it, especially since the trailer is particularly successful. We are now only waiting for one thing, a definitive release date to compete with our favorite League of Legends champions.
