Armenians continue their voluntary exodus from the Nagorno-Karabakh region, following the lightning military operation launched by Azerbaijan 10 days ago that ended with the surrender of the separatists.
The spokeswoman for the Armenian Cabinet, Nazli Baghdasaryan, announced today, Saturday, that more than 100,000 residents of Karabakh have moved to Armenia, since September 24 until today.
“So far, 100,417 people from Karabakh have arrived in Armenia in 21,43 vehicles,” Bagdasaryan said in a press conference. According to her, 81,139 people have already been registered, and the Armenian government has allocated temporary housing for 32,200 displaced people.
According to the Armenian authorities, regarding 120,000 people lived in the region, before the situation worsened recently, as Azerbaijan launched a lightning military attack on the region on September 19, a separatist enclave inhabited by regarding 120,000 Armenians.
After the ceasefire agreed upon on September 20, Azerbaijan opened all checkpoints with Armenia for the unhindered exit of civilians from the region, and a humanitarian center was established in the village of Kornidzor near the so-called Lachin corridor, which is the main road between Armenia and the separatist region.
Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the Azerbaijani President, had stated earlier that the integration of Karabakh Armenians into Azerbaijani economic, political and social life will be difficult, and that we must be prepared because some will not accept this policy. In turn, President Ilham Aliyev stressed that Armenians in Karabakh will have the same rights as citizens of Azerbaijan.
