The Mysterious Death of Christian Pilnacek: Questions Surrounding Police Conduct and Investigation

2024-03-22 17:00:00

The body of the former justice section chief Christian Pilnacek was in the early morning of October 20, 2023 by his partner Karin Wurm found on the banks of the Danube.

“Certain demeanor” of the officials

According to Wurm, two detectives rang her doorbell at 10 a.m. Their goal: to secure Pilnacek’s cell phone, keys, wallet and computer. The police did not ask regarding a USB stick that Pilnacek always carried with him and that might no longer be found with the body.

Wurm reports that she did not let the officers into the house, but handed them the items in a plastic bag because of her “certain demeanor.”

In principle, seizures are only carried out in criminal proceedings and on the orders of the public prosecutor – in the case of a dead person, perhaps if third-party negligence is suspected. Exception: If there is imminent danger, the police may act independently.

Police are no longer allowed to comment

Was that the case? In response to KURIER’s request, the LPD Lower Austria refers to the public prosecutor’s office. The police investigation into the case has been completed, which is why they are no longer authorized to comment. The Krems public prosecutor’s office can only provide information on request on Monday.

From the State Criminal Police Office The KURIER says that the items were delivered to Pilnacek’s wife – without analyzing the data.

The “Pilnacek police case” must be fully investigated, demands the FPÖ General Secretary Christian Hafenecker in a first reaction. “Apparently nothing was going normally with regard to the police investigation.” SPÖ mandater Kai Jan Krainer, who works with Hafenecker on the U-Committee, criticizes the police for their “wall of silence.” Parliamentary questions will now be submitted.mh
