The Mustache J: A Revolutionary Electric Bike with a French-Made Frame

Mustache is launching a new electric bike called “J”, which has the particularity of having a frame produced in France. A rarity in the segment.

At the Eurobike show at the beginning of summer, Mustache unveils its brand new product: the “J”. A single letter, but three very different variations for this bike with a radical look: J. On for the urban version, J. All for “versatility” and J. Off for riding on the paths. We imagine that the three will still be very close in behavior, the differences being in the choice of components since the framework is the same for all three. And let’s talk regarding the framework: produced in France, this is one of the rare aluminum bicycle frames produced in “casting” (foundry) with CNC machining subsequently. No welding, therefore, since the front triangle and the swingarm are molded in one piece. The first stage is carried out in Vitrolles in the South of France, and the second in the Vosges. Mustache then collects the frame for painting and final assembly with the parts. Mustache estimates that this 100% French frame makes it possible to reduce the circuit from 15,000 km to only 1000 km, compared to a frame produced in Asia.

Funny cinematic

Mustache has never been known for making cheap bikes. The French brand rather targets a wealthy and premium audience. The J is no exception to the rule with steep prices: €5,999 for the urban, 5,199 euros for the versatile and €5,699 for the all-terrain J. Off which, on the other hand, will have nothing of a mountain bike with a position far too straight and a disabling weight. For offroad enthusiasts, however, the Mustache range is already well stocked.

The technical sheet is in any case unsurprising with a Magic Grip Control shock absorber (developed internally by Mustache), luggage rack for the J. On version which benefits from the Enviolo belt and hub transmission, Marzocchi Bomber Z2 suspension ( equivalent of a Fox 34) on the off-road variant with Cues 11-speed rear derailleur. The J range also trusts Bosch with a motor Performance Line and a 500 Wh battery. A 625 Wh pack is available as an option (€200). But this “medium” sized battery does not limit the weight of the machine, which exceeds 30 kg.

Above all, the cinematic questions : the crankset/motor is housed in the swinging arm. Which would indicate that the saddle height varies when the shock absorber compresses! We’ve rarely seen this on a full suspension bike. And if so, that’s… very special. This would obviously have to be verified in use, but Mustache would have thus produced the first fully suspended open frame bicycle.
