The municipality of Heerenveen wants to designate the badgers’ hometown in Jubbega as a new construction location

The municipality of Heerenveen wants to demolish the former JB Kanschool in Jubbega to build housing on the same location. But, a family of badgers has been living under the school for years. Naturalist Appie Bergsma from Jubbega has current images of the badgers, which live at the back under the emergency room.

In a press release about the demolition, the municipality calls the possible construction site on the edge of the village ‘a promising location for housing’. Bergsma thinks it is special that the municipality is coming up with this location.

A badger is a protected species. This means that a place where the animals live cannot simply be demolished. In such a case, the badgers must first be moved and that is not easy either. “I’m not sure, but I think they also have young,” says Bergsma. “That makes movement even more difficult.”
