One case of mpox, formerly known as monkey pox, has been confirmed in Sweden. Swedish Health Minister Jakob Forssmed announced this on Thursday, Reuters reported. It is the first case of mpox outside of Africa.

Minister Forssmed has now said that a more severe variant of the virus, referred to as Clade I, has appeared in Sweden.
The case was diagnosed in the vicinity of Stockholm, the sick person previously lived in an affected area in Africa, the director of the Agency for Public Health Olivia Wigzell said at a press conference.
The minister assured the public that the country’s vaccine stocks are sufficient and there is no need to take any additional safety measures, writes the Omni server.
Mpox is a viral disease that is transmitted from animals to humans, but also through close physical contact with a person infected with the virus. As of January 2022, sixteen African countries have reported 38,465 cases of mpox and 1,456 deaths. This year there are 160 percent more cases compared to last year. Congo is the most affected.
