The most popular battle royale you’re not playing will be F2P next week.

Naraka: Bladepoint is celebrating the launch of the PS5 by lowering its price.

NetEase’s mystical, martial arts-focused battle royale game Naraka: Bladepoint is going free-to-play next week. The game marks its PS5 launch by throwing its doors wide open, allowing anyone to try it out without shelling out the €20/£18 it currently costs. The change will take effect on Thursday, July 13.

NetEase wrote a whole FAQ to explain the decision to switch to F2P regarding two years following the game was released in 2021, but the main information is probably: “All game content is available for free players, including all game modes, events, cosmetics, and character customization. So you won’t be isolated from paying players if you download the game following July 13th.

This does not mean that the game will become an egalitarian paradise. Players who have purchased the game – and those who decide to shell out enough in-game currency to upgrade their status – will have access to a few perks and benefits over F2P hoi polloi. In particular, free players will see the speed at which they can unlock new heroes drastically reduced: They can only earn 35 hero coins per week, and it takes 100 coins to unlock a new type. Paying players, on the other hand, can accumulate all the coins they want.

By paying, you will take a little advance. While free and paid players start with access to Viper, Tianhai, Zipin Yin & Heroes; Matari, players who have spent money will receive 300 hero coins (which is three heroes) which they can use as they wish. Paid players will also have access to ranks at level 20 and lobby chat at level 5, compared to level 50 and level 20 for free players.

Full details of the transition can be found on Naraka’s Steam news page, including a new 12 vs. 12 mode and information on discounts, special unlocks, and a collaboration with a streamer called “Maximilian Dood” whom I have certainly, 100%, heard of it. Otherwise, you just have to wait until July 13 to see the transmogrification take place.

Naraka: Bladepoint currently holds a mixed spot in Steam’s user ratings rankings, but that doesn’t seem to have bothered it. It has around 90,000 players as of this writing and ranks in the top 10 of the most played games on Steam. I have to admit this is a surprise to me. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone talk regarding this game the way I do games like Fortnite; I think it’s probably more important outside of the English-speaking world.

Its popularity isn’t a bad thing: when PCG’s Tyler Wilde looked at the game for his Naraka: Bladepoint review, he gave it a 73% rating and remarked that “when it comes to two healed players stalking each other through the trees, Naraka’s thrills are on par with the best games in the genre.”
