Trends in first names

Statistics Austria’s publicly available first name data goes back to 1984. Among other things, this enables an interesting comparison: Which names have increased the most in 2021 compared to the previous decades, and which have lost the most? The number of children who received this name in 2021 and the percentage change from 1984 to 2020 are always shown in brackets. Only names that were given at least 50 times in 2021 were considered for the trends.

Registered the strongest growth in boy names Lio (152, +1083 percent), whose share has increased more than tenfold compared to the period 1984-2020. The proportion of rose only slightly less Policy (60, +1002 percent), followed by Alexey (53, +684 percent), Ayaz (54, +477 percent) and Malik (111, +466 percent). On the other hand, the decline was the strongest Christoph (65, -91 percent), Markus (87, -88 percent) and Thomas (116, -87 percent).

Hawaiian names were particularly popular with girls: Malea (68, +1238 percent) and Malia (59, +794 percent) gained the most. Behind follows Mathea (94, +682 percent), Others (66, +587 percent) and Alya (54, +547 percent).
