The oldest fans of Mortal Kombat will remember the existence of a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe that disappointed a good part of the community due, among several things, to the loss of essence gore of the franchise. However, this followed a few years following the release of Mortal Kombat (2011)a reboot that returned to the origins of the saga abandoning superheroes as available characters in the game, which led to deliveries of Injustice.
However, what you might not know is that the so-called Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was key in the launch of the subsequent restart of the saga. This is how Ed Boon, one of the co-creators of the iconic fighting franchise, explains it in an interview with Game Informer.
“The biggest lesson we learned with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was that there was an opportunity to two separate games that might embrace their own roots without compromising the other”, comments the professional in the talk. “This resulted in us deciding that the next Mortal Kombat game would be a complete reboot and aggressively embrace everything Mortal Kombat is all regarding. This included going back to the 2D fight shot, retelling [la historia] from the original trilogy, and return to our classic Fatalities with no holds barred.”
This led to an important change for the developers, who went from being Midway to the well-known NetherRealm with all the problems that this entails. Luckily, the authors of 2011’s Mortal Kombat followed through with their plan until they released a game that helped them understand the preferences of your audience.
“Mortal Kombat validated our theory that there was a strong demand for content single-player in fighting games,” Boon explains. “In many ways, he laid the foundation for the NetherRealm Studios games that followed. Even though Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was our first game with a story mode, Mortal Kombat is where it really took off. Also, it introduced Challenge Tower, King of the Hill, and much more. I think it’s pretty safe to say that Mortal Kombat set the stage for all NetherRealm games that followed.”
Mortal Kombat 12 would be close to being announced
Returning to the present, Ed Boon has already raised the expectations of fans of the saga through clues that point to an upcoming announcement of the expected Mortal Kombat 12. For the moment, we have to wait for those responsible for the delivery to publish the official presentation, which may confirm the release date, platforms for which it will be intended, and characteristics of the experience.
