In the face of “flight shame” or “cruise shaming” hardly anyone wants to get on a plane or spend their vacation on a cruise ship. Train travel is the new trend. Not just to get from A to B, but to experience small and large adventures and to make contact with the local population.
If you spend hours or days sitting in a compartment with like-minded people, like on the Trans-Siberian Express or through the infinity of Australia, you automatically share the pleasure and burden of long train journeys. Because things are not always as comfortable as in the legendary Orient Express to Istanbul or in luxury tourist trains such as the Eastern Oriental Express between Bangkok and Singapore.
500 train journeys as a destination
But where should the journey go if the train is the destination? Long-time Wanderlust magazine editor Sarah Baxter has put together her personal selection of famous routes and lesser-known routes, including cogwheel, tube and tram rides, from around the world.
In her latest book “500 Train Journeys – Legendary Railway Journeys Around the World”which was published by Knesebeck Verlag, makes them want to make discoveries by train.
She has divided her short to multi-page descriptions of individual routes into five chapters according to historical aspects – from train journeys through prehistory such as the “cloud train” in northern Argentina through the 19th century to the present, to the high-speed trains in the People’s Republic of China, for example .
On the pages of the photo series we present ten of the 500 legendary train journeys.
