Opening of an ONMT office in Montreal and launch of a direct Montreal-Marrakech line

The ONMT has signed a strategic partnership with Air Transat for the launch of a Montreal-Marrakech line. It will thus be the only airline in North America to offer direct flights to the ocher city twice a week in summer.

A direct Montreal-Marrakech line will be operational from June 2024. This connection is in fact the first point-to-point connection to Marrakech from North America, outside the Casablanca hub. In this regard, the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT) signed a strategic partnership with Air Transat on Wednesday, October 25. “Second North American company, following Air Canada, to operate in Morocco, Air Transat becomes the only airline in North America to offer direct flights to Marrakech twice a week in summer, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from June to October and once a week in winter, on Saturdays from November to April.

It also enriches the existing offer in Morocco, namely the historic Casablanca – Montreal line operated by Royal Air Maroc, a strategic route for the Oneworld alliance company,” indicates the ONMT in this regard. Referring to the Office, this Montreal-Marrakech line will open up to travelers a wide field of possibilities with access to the seaside resorts of Essaouira, Taghazout and Agadir, but also to mountain and ecotourism destinations (Azilal, Béni Mellal…), the South (Ouarzazate, Zagora and Merzouga), and even the city break and cultural destinations of the North (Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes and Fez).

Note that “Marrakech represents 24% of Canadian tourist arrivals in Morocco, a rate which might reach 40% by establishing itself as the main city of departure as part of circuits or combined trips,” specifies the Office. And to recall that “over the last 10 years, seat capacity from Canada to Morocco has increased by 87%, from 87,000 to 164,000 seats per year. From January to September 2023, arrivals amounted to 82,590 people with a 23% capacity increase planned for next winter. In order to optimize the potential of this growing market, the ONMT will open a representative office in Montreal from 2024.

This effective presence on the ground close to Canadian travel planners and airlines will make it possible to strengthen the commercial strategy of the Office in the continuity of the deployment of its “Light in action” action plan.
Note that in addition to the agreement signed with Air Transat, a side-event was organized by the ONMT for Canadian Tour Operators and travel agents and the media. For the occasion, Hamid Bentahar, president of the National Tourism Confederation, Lahcen Zelmat, president of the National Federation of the Hotel Industry, and Imane Rmili, president of the National Federation of Tourist Restaurateurs, were alongside Adel El Fakir and ONMT teams in Montreal to mark the event.
