The three-month closure from September 2, 2024, is only the first setback for those who use the Mont Blanc Tunnel, who will have to be patient. This is because it is a “testing ground” that includes experimental work “that will make it possible to identify the best operating model for the future”, the operating company TMB-GEIE announced in a press release relayed by the French Autostrada and Tunnels du Mont-Blanc (ATMB) and the Italian SITMB concessionaire.

The project was initially planned for 2023 but was delayed following a landslide on the A43 at Morion a year ago.

This tunnel is 60 years old.

The famous road tunnel connecting France and Italy will be closed from 5 p.m. on September 2 to 5 p.m. on December 16 for extensive renovations to its vaults, according to an announcement released on Tuesday by the concessionaire. This time period was chosen because the autumn season has the lowest attendance, especially for light vehicles (which account for 68% of traffic). Specifically, users will be provided with a map of alternative routes. on the Internet and the TMB Mobility app. The subscription valid on the work start date will be automatically extended for four months.

It is worth reminding that the 60-year-old structure is used by thousands of vehicles every day. It is bidirectional and 11.6 kilometers long, but now requires “extensive civil engineering work”, TMB-GEIE added. This new project involves two sections of the tunnel vault with a total length of 600 meters. “If positive results are achieved”, it is planned to build another 600 meters in 2025. All this will require an investment of 50 million euros. Preparatory work has already begun in the autumn of 2023, resulting in a nine-week closure at that time.
