A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook the states of New York and New Jersey this Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The agency reported a tremor with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, with the epicenter near Lebanon, New Jersey, regarding 75 kilometers west of New York.

At the time the earthquake shook the earth, a session of the United Nations Security Council was taking place. Janti Soeripto, president and executive director of the NGO Save the Children, spoke regarding the crisis in Gaza.

“There is no sanitation whatsoever. The community I visited had one bathroom for 69 people. Women line up for three hours to wear it. Schools, normally a place of protection for children, are a place where they cannot normally have humanitarian services. “My team is assessing the impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” Hochul added.

The New York City Fire Department told EFE that, so far, no “major incidents” have been recorded, and that authorities continue to “monitor” the city.

For its part, the New York Mayor’s team indicated in X that at the moment they do not have any impact report and that they are evaluating the situation.
