As announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the service of the first conscripts is planned to begin at the beginning of February – in the Air Defense Battalion of the Air Force in Radvilišky.
Students will not be included in the list of conscripts, but they can be called up for another year after graduating from high school until the age of 26.
They can also suspend their studies for the period of compulsory military service or complete the training of junior officer commanders (JKVM) within three years. There is still an opportunity to perform voluntary non-permanent military service in the National Defense Volunteer Forces.
Young men and women between the ages of 18 and 38 can also perform military service voluntarily. They are given the opportunity to choose the desired place and time of service and receive the maximum cumulative benefits.
In the spring of 2015, the Seimas renewed the nine-month continuous mandatory initial military service. This was done taking into account the changed geopolitical situation and threats to state security.
At the end of the autumn session, the Seimas began to consider the restructuring of military conscription in late 2023, creating the prerequisites for conscripting more young people.
According to the new model presented by the Government, young people aged 18-21 who have finished school would be called to serve. At the moment, 18-23-year-old guys are being drafted. Post-secondary education would no longer be treated as an exception to deferring service.
The changes also provide for the differentiation of regular service according to the duration – young people would have the opportunity to serve for six or nine months.
