Organize inmates data… Possible pardon of opposition figures such as Kim Kyung-soo
It is understood that the Ministry of Justice has begun work in advance to prepare for the ‘Liberation Day special envoy’, the first special amnesty since the inauguration of President Yoon Seok-yeol.
According to the legal community on the 18th, the Ministry of Justice is organizing reference materials for inmates to select special pardons ahead of Liberation Day on the 15th of next month.
The Ministry of Justice plans to hold an amnesty review committee next month to review the list of candidates for pardons following receiving the list of those eligible for pardon from the front-line prosecutor’s office.
The final pardon is expected to be announced by President Yoon directly before Liberation Day following a resolution at the State Council meeting.
There are many observations in the legal circle that former President Lee Myung-bak will be included in the special amnesty.
Since the election of President Yoon, the passport has consistently insisted that former President Lee be pardoned.
When asked regarding the possibility of Lee’s pardon on his way to work last month, President Yoon also left the possibility open, saying, “Isn’t it right to have him spend twenty years in prison? Even in light of the precedents of the past.”
Former President Lee was sentenced to 17 years in prison on charges of embezzlement and bribery, but was temporarily released last month due to suspension of execution.
In response, the opposition may demand the pardon of former Gyeongnam governor Kim Kyung-soo or former Dongyang University professor Jeong Kyung-shim.
As the domestic and overseas economic conditions are difficult, the possibility of pardons of major businessmen is being discussed.
In particular, the business community is strongly demanding the pardon of Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who was released on parole following being sentenced to two years and six months in prison for the National Nongdan case.
