The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced whether D. Matulionis did not follow the instructions during the NATO meeting

“The commission of investigation of the possible official misconduct of Deividas Matulionis of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine found that D. Matulionis committed an official misconduct and did not follow the instructions of the ministry. However, taking into account the context of the results of the NATO summit, it is difficult to assess the damage caused to the state, so the commission does not propose to impose a penalty,” the ministry informed BNS on Monday.

The ambassador himself did not comment on the situation to BNS.

The investigation into D. Matulionis was started after doubts arose that the diplomat could not comply with the mandate given by the state institutions and by his activities weaken Lithuania’s negotiating positions in the negotiations regarding the documents of the NATO summit in Vilnius, the news portal “Delfi” announced in August.

According to him, the investigation is related to the actions of D. Matulionis during negotiations on the NATO communiqué and wording on the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania.

President Gitanas Nausėda previously expressed his confidence in D. Matulionis.

The President said that D. Matulionis was not “between two fires” when NATO was negotiating the final text of the summit declaration, and the Presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held different positions on how hard to pressure the allies in order to achieve a favorable result for Lithuania.

He emphasized that “the negotiation process was not so simple” and promised to meet with the ambassador and hear his version of events.

“There were moments when it was necessary to choose, when some parts of the text of the conclusions were connected with other parts. Believe me, the least I wanted, as the host of the NATO summit, was for everyone to get on the planes and fly out and no document would be accepted at all,” said G. Nausėda to the LRT TV show “LRT Forumas”.

Such a scenario, according to the Lithuanian leader, would have been the “biggest catastrophe”.
