“The situation of the Baltic Sea is not good. It’s time to save this sea for the people who live around it, for our fishermen and for future generations. I will call on the ministers of fisheries, agriculture and environment of all the EU countries around the Baltic States to intensify their actions”, said Virginijus Sinkevičius, a member of the European Commission who initiated the ministerial meeting.

V. Sinkevičius and the ministers of Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden and Germany will discuss what has been achieved since the first conference “Our Baltic” held in 2020 and what still needs to be done.

The main topics of the conference are the environment and fisheries, economic activities related to the sea, unexploded ordnance.

At the bottom of the Baltic Sea there are still about 300,000 tons of unexploded ordnance. It pollutes the Baltic Sea and prevents the development of economic activities in the sea.

As announced, the Baltic Sea is extremely vulnerable due to its shallowness, small connection with the ocean, slow water circulation and low water temperature. More than 85 million people live around the Baltic Sea. people.

At the “Our Baltic” conference held in 2020, the European Commission and all EU member states bordering the Baltic committed to protect the environment of the Baltic Sea, fight eutrophication, reduce pollution, ensure sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, support a sustainable blue economy and monitor progress.
