While in different political parties voices are heard to demand that we extend more than the two reactors planned by the government, the Minister of Energy is sticking to her positions. “We work in an agreement on 2 gigawatt hours because they are the two most recent plants that require the least work and can be extended with little complexity”explique Tine Van der Straeten. It recalls that the other power stations include “micro cracks” where are the oldest.
For the Minister of Energy, extending more than two reactors would not change anything in terms of electricity prices. “Today, all our power stations are working, but we are faced with high prices. So it has no impact on the price“, she believes.
As for the supply of electricity for this winter, it is, according to the Minister, guaranteed. “Our network manager does not foresee any problems”, explains Tine Van der Straeten.
The gas supply should not be a problem either, according to the minister. “We import two to three times more than Belgian consumption,” she explains.
Belgium will therefore have electricity and gas, but at what price? While Belgium today exports electricity to France, where many nuclear reactors are shut down, and gas to Germany, demonstrating “solidarity in energy”believes the Minister, it is now necessary, at European level, to “solidarity for prices”.
