The President of the Republic of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced the amount of the minimum wage that will come into effect on January 1, 2023, which is 8500 TL ($455) compared to the current 5500 TL.

The Turkish Head of State spoke on Thursday from the presidential complex in Ankara.

Since the beginning of the month, representatives of the Ministry of Labour, the trade union confederation of labor (Turk-Is) and the employers’ confederation (TISK), have met several times to try to find an agreement for the salary increase. minimum.

But at the end of the 3rd meeting with the ministry, the parties did not reach an agreement.

In this case, as provided for by law, it is the government and the Head of State who define the new amount.

It is in this context that President Erdogan, Minister of Labor Vedat Bilgin, and the representative of the employers’ union TISK, Özgür Burak Akkol, appeared in front of the cameras.

After recalling the previous increases, in particular at the start of 2022, and in July due to high inflation, the Turkish President explained that the new increase was determined according to the social and economic realities of the country.

Thus, the new minimum wage in Türkiye will be 8500 TL (regarding $455) from January 1, 2023.

This represents an increase of almost 55% compared to the minimum wage in force since July 2022 (5500 TL).

The Turkish president also explained that the government expects a sharp drop in inflation in the coming months, he foresees a decline of up to 30% in mid-2023 and 20% at the end of the year.

“In the event of an unexpected situation during the year, we will not hesitate to make a new adjustment in favor of workers in the summer of 2023, as was the case this summer,” Erdogan said in conclusion.
